Conversing with God through His Word, Part 11

CONTEXT VERSUS CONTENT

Concordances are alphabetical catalogs of words in the Bible. Besides listing all the verses that use them below each word, concordances also link words to a dictionary at the back. So, concordances have two functions. First, they help us to locate verses from the words in our translation of the Bible; and second, they help us to identify and capture the meaning of the Hebrew, Greek, or Aramaic words behind the ones in our translation because Bible versions often use the same English word to translate various ones in the original language. Unfortunately, some people – ignoring the fact that the same word means different things in different contexts – think all they have to do is look up all the verses that contain a word and add up the results to understand it, but they are mistaken. While it’s okay to locate passages based on content – the words they contain – it is also dangerous to explore the Bible simply by looking up all the verses that mention similar people, places, or things. Leapfrogging the context that controls content – this approach to Bible study may lead to false impressions of the words and make us draw unsound conclusions from the text.
